Good Questions

Finding a CPA or tax preparer near you

Harmony Tax Services is a local CPA and tax firm based in Thompson's Station, TN, serving Franklin, Nashville, Brentwood, Spring Hill, Cool Springs and the surrounding area. You can meet in person or work with us remotely from anywhere in Tennessee. Call (615) 914-7215 or request a consultation online to get started.

It depends on your return. A simple individual return costs less than a business, S-corporation or multi-schedule return, and fees rise with complexity. Harmony Tax Services gives you a clear, upfront quote before any work begins, so you know the price with no surprises. Call (615) 914-7215 for a free estimate.

A tax accountant prepares and files your tax returns, finds the deductions and credits you qualify for, plans ahead to lower what you owe, responds to IRS notices, and keeps your bookkeeping and payroll accurate. Harmony Tax Services does all of this for individuals and small businesses across Middle Tennessee.

All three can prepare taxes, but a CPA (Certified Public Accountant) holds a state license and can also represent clients before the IRS, audit financial statements, and provide higher-level advisory. Harmony Tax Services offers CPA-level tax preparation, planning, bookkeeping and IRS representation in one place.

Usually yes if your taxes are anything beyond a basic W-2 return — a business, self-employment, investments, rental property or a major life change. A professional often finds enough deductions to more than cover the fee, saves you hours, and reduces the risk of costly mistakes or missed credits.

If you own an LLC, S-corp or growing business, professional help usually pays for itself. Harmony Tax Services handles business tax returns, bookkeeping, payroll, quarterly estimated taxes and entity decisions so you stay compliant and keep more profit — instead of trying to do it all yourself.

Look for a local firm that handles both bookkeeping and taxes, so nothing falls through the cracks. Harmony Tax Services provides monthly bookkeeping and payroll for Middle Tennessee small businesses and also prepares the tax return — one team, clean books, and no surprises at tax time.

Tax preparation & filing

Software works for very simple returns, but professional help pays off if you own a business, are self-employed, have investments or rental property, went through a major life change, or received an IRS notice. Harmony Tax Services prepares individual and business returns, catches deductions software often misses, and gives you a real person to call year-round.

Fees depend on the forms and schedules your return requires. A straightforward individual 1040 costs less than a business return with multiple schedules, or a partnership or S-corporation filing. We always give you a clear, upfront quote before any work begins. Call (615) 914-7215 for an estimate.

For most individuals: W-2s, any 1099s, mortgage and property-tax statements, records of deductible expenses, and last year's return. Business owners should add income and expense records, payroll reports and prior filings. When you reach out, we send a personalized checklist so you know exactly what to gather.

It depends on your age, filing status and type of income — the threshold is roughly the standard deduction for your status. Even below it, you often should file to claim a refund of withholding or credits like the Earned Income Credit or Child Tax Credit. We tell you whether you must file and whether filing benefits you.

The standard deduction is a flat amount that reduces your taxable income. For 2025 it is roughly $15,000 for single filers and about $30,000 for married couples filing jointly, with more for those 65 or older; it is adjusted each year. Most people take it — we check whether itemizing would save you more.

Refunds, deadlines & the IRS

For 2025 individual returns filed in 2026, the federal deadline is April 15, 2026. S-corporation and partnership returns are generally due March 15, 2026. Extensions are available but do not extend the time to pay. We track your deadlines and file on time so you avoid penalties.

The IRS issues most refunds within about 21 days of accepting an e-filed return with direct deposit; paper returns and mailed checks take longer. Harmony Tax Services e-files and sets up direct deposit to get your refund as fast as possible, and can check your status if it is delayed.

If you owe, the IRS charges a failure-to-file penalty of about 5% of the tax per month (up to 25%) plus a smaller failure-to-pay penalty and interest — so file even if you can't pay in full. If you're owed a refund there's no penalty, but you must claim it within three years. We can also file late or unfiled prior-year returns for you.

Generally three years from when you filed, extended to six years if income was substantially understated, and with no time limit for unfiled returns or fraud. If you receive an audit notice, bring it to us right away — we'll review it and represent you through the process.

Don't panic and don't ignore it — most notices are routine and fixable when handled promptly. Bring the letter to us and we'll explain what it means and respond on your behalf. We handle IRS and state notices, audits, back taxes and unfiled returns so you don't deal with the agency alone.

Yes. If a past return had errors or missed deductions, we can prepare an amended return (Form 1040-X), generally within three years of the original filing, to correct it or claim a larger refund. We also prepare unfiled prior-year returns to get you caught up.

Tax planning, business & the client portal

Common strategies include timing income and deductions, maximizing retirement and HSA contributions, choosing the right business entity, harvesting investment losses, and planning large transactions in advance. We build a personalized, year-round plan to reduce what you legally owe rather than just reacting at filing time.

The best time to plan is well before year-end. Proactive planning lets you time income, maximize deductions and retirement contributions, and avoid surprises at filing. We offer year-round planning and projections, especially valuable for business owners, high earners and anyone with a major change coming.

Tax preparation files an accurate return for a year that has already ended. Tax planning happens before year-end and shapes what that return will look like — timing income and deductions, structuring your business, and forecasting your liability so you owe less and are never surprised. Harmony Tax Services does both.

Yes. We prepare partnership and multi-member LLC returns (Form 1065), S-corporation returns (Form 1120-S), C-corporation returns (Form 1120), and Schedule C sole-proprietor returns. We also handle quarterly estimated taxes and can advise on entity selection and owner compensation.

An LLC gives liability protection and simple taxes; electing S-corp status can cut self-employment tax once your profit is high enough — often around $50,000 or more of net profit — but adds payroll and a separate return. We run the numbers for your business and recommend the most tax-efficient structure.

It depends on your transaction volume and how many accounts you have. Simple monthly bookkeeping costs less than a high-volume business that also needs payroll. We scope it to your needs and quote a flat monthly rate upfront — and clean books usually pay for themselves at tax time.

Existing clients can securely upload documents and view returns through our client portal — use the Client Login link at the top of this site. If you're a new client, contact us first and we'll set up your account and walk you through it.
